Heel Injections

When conservative treatments aren't providing enough relief, targeted injections can deliver powerful anti-inflammatory medication directly where you need it most.

Fast Relief for Persistent Heel Pain

Heel injections are a valuable treatment option when heel pain doesn't respond adequately to conservative measures like stretching, orthotics, and physical therapy. By delivering medication directly to the source of inflammation, injections can provide significant pain relief and help break the cycle of chronic discomfort.

Dr. Johnson offers several types of injection therapy, selecting the most appropriate option based on your specific condition, medical history, and treatment goals.

Types of Heel Injections

Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroid (cortisone) injections are a powerful anti-inflammatory treatment that can provide rapid relief from heel pain. They're particularly effective for:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel bursitis
  • Achilles tendon inflammation
  • Bone spurs causing soft tissue irritation

Relief typically begins within a few days and can last several weeks to months. We limit the number of corticosteroid injections to prevent potential tissue weakening with repeated use.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Injections

PRP therapy uses your body's own healing factors to promote tissue repair. We draw a small amount of your blood, process it to concentrate the platelets, and inject this growth factor-rich solution into the damaged tissue.

  • Stimulates natural healing processes
  • Good for chronic conditions that haven't responded to other treatments
  • No risk of allergic reaction since it uses your own blood
  • Can provide longer-lasting results than corticosteroids

Conditions We Treat with Injections

  • Plantar Fasciitis: The most common reason for heel injections
  • Achilles Tendinopathy: Chronic Achilles tendon pain
  • Heel Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs around the heel
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Nerve compression causing heel and arch pain
  • Baxter's Nerve Entrapment: Specific nerve compression in the heel

What to Expect

Before the Injection

  • We'll review your medical history and current medications
  • The injection site will be cleaned and may be numbed with a local anesthetic
  • Ultrasound guidance may be used to ensure precise placement

During the Injection

  • The procedure takes only a few minutes
  • You may feel pressure or a brief pinch
  • The injection itself is quick

After the Injection

  • You can return to normal activities, though we may recommend limiting strenuous activity for a day or two
  • Some temporary soreness at the injection site is normal
  • For corticosteroids, relief typically begins within 2-3 days
  • For PRP, improvement develops gradually over several weeks

Are Injections Right for You?

Heel injections are typically recommended when conservative treatments haven't provided adequate relief. They're not usually a first-line treatment, but rather part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may also include:

  • Stretching exercises
  • Custom orthotics
  • Physical therapy
  • Proper footwear
  • Activity modification

During your consultation, Dr. Johnson will evaluate your condition and discuss whether injection therapy is appropriate for your situation.
