Diabetic Foot Care

Protecting your feet is essential to protecting your health. Our comprehensive diabetic foot care helps you stay active and avoid serious complications.

Why Diabetic Foot Care Matters

If you have diabetes, taking care of your feet isn't optional - it's essential. Diabetes can cause nerve damage (neuropathy) that reduces sensation in your feet, making it easy to miss cuts, blisters, or other injuries. It can also affect blood circulation, slowing the healing process.

These factors combine to make even small foot problems potentially serious. But with proper care and regular check-ups, most diabetes-related foot complications are preventable. That's where we come in.

Diabetic Foot Complications We Treat

  • Diabetic Neuropathy: Nerve damage causing numbness, tingling, or pain
  • Foot Ulcers: Open sores that are slow to heal
  • Infections: Including cellulitis and bone infections
  • Charcot Foot: A serious condition causing bone weakening and deformity
  • Poor Circulation: Peripheral arterial disease affecting the feet
  • Calluses and Corns: Which can break down into ulcers
  • Ingrown Toenails: Which can become infected

Our Diabetic Foot Care Services

Comprehensive Foot Exams

Regular foot exams are crucial for catching problems early. We recommend diabetic patients have their feet examined at least once a year, or more frequently if you have neuropathy or other risk factors.

Wound and Nail Care

We provide initial evaluation and short-term care of wounds, calluses, and diabetic nails. For chronic or ongoing care, we often utilize services such as wound care centers, orthotists/prosthetists, and nail salons.

Diabetic Orthotics

We provide prescriptions for specially designed inserts that reduce pressure on vulnerable areas, prevent ulcers, and accommodate any foot deformities.

Daily Foot Care Tips

  • Check your feet daily: Look for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or nail problems
  • Wash daily: Use warm (not hot) water and dry thoroughly, especially between toes
  • Moisturize: Apply lotion to prevent dry, cracked skin - but not between toes
  • Never go barefoot: Even indoors, wear shoes or slippers
  • Wear proper footwear: Well-fitted shoes with good support
  • Cut nails carefully: Straight across, and consider professional nail care
  • Keep blood flowing: Wiggle toes and move ankles regularly
  • Manage blood sugar: Good control helps prevent complications
